Consider this your convenient and stylish all-in-one cellar door, which showcases the best of Tamar Valley wines (including Holm Oak’s of course!) and produce. Situated at the heart of the Tamar Valley Wine Trail, the new Tamar Valley Wine Centre also features craft beers and spirits, as well as some of the wonderful produce grown in this pristine region. The kitchen serves up great woodfired pizza as well as platters that celebrate the best seasonal produce from local growers. This is definitely a must-visit destination and a great way to sample before you buy.
This small but perfectly formed Pachinko restaurant in Quadrant Mall is already making its mark with locals, with chef-owner Jonny McCoy and co-owner and front-of-house manager Ally McCoy serving up an eclectic and inventive mix of modern Asian flavours – think slow-cooked lamb shoulder with egg noodles, zucchini, chilli and Sichuan pepper or master stock fried chicken wings and pickles. Open for lunch and dinner, the highly seasonal (and therefore ever-changing) menus feature outstanding local produce, craft beers and small-batch, natural, organic or biodynamic wines. Make sure you book for dinner, as this bright, welcoming space holds just 20 people, and it’s definitely worth ordering the ‘Feed Me’ chef’s selection – incredible value.
For great seafood and a good selection of mostly Tasmanian wines, Rupert & Hound, located on the Launceston Seaport, is rapidly becoming a favourite. Settle in for lunch or dinner and peruse the menu over a nice glass of, well, perhaps Holm Oak’s Pinot Gris with a dozen oysters from Tasmania’s pristine waters. Rupert & Hound’s menu runs from a creamy seafood chowder to sensational fish and chips, along with plenty of alternatives for those who prefer meat or poultry, such as a buttermilk chicken burger or, for dinner, a shared platter of slow-roasted Cape Grim coffee-rubbed brisket – dare we say, a fine match for our Cabernet Merlot... Open Tues-Sat 11am-late; Sun 11am-4pm.
If you’re heading a little further afield on the way to Holm Oak, the Cormorant Café on the Pier near Seahorse World is highly recommended as a stopover from morning right through till late afternoon. Sit back and enjoy the gorgeous water views and take your pick from an imaginative all-day menu including a hearty toasted beef brisket and caramelised onion sandwich or Ploughman’s platter for two. And, if you don’t stop for lunch, the Devonshire tea, with freshly baked scones from the kitchen, is well worth the detour. Open 7 days 10am-4pm in winter; 10am-5pm in summer.
